The following tours will be offered on Thursday, January 21, 2010:
Manitoba Hydro Dorsey Converter Station – Departs @ 9:00 a.m.
Manitoba Hydro’s Dorsey Converter Station is the southern terminus for the utility’s high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission lines. Built in 1968, Dorsey is located near the town of Rosser, Manitoba, about 26 km northwest of the City of Winnipeg. The converter station was named after Professor John Dorsey, who taught electrical engineering at the University of Manitoba from 1912 to 1952.
Boeing Production Facility – Departs @ 9:30 a.m.
Boeing Winnipeg’s manufacturing plant is responsible for manufacturing many composite aircraft parts. The most notable part currently produces at this plant is the body to wing fairing, rudder fairing, and front landing gear door for the 787 Dreamliner project. Boeing Winnipeg currently has approximately 1300 employees and 730 000 square feet in three buildings locally.
Lafarge Precast Concrete Plant – Departs @ 9:30 a.m.
Lafarge is the world’s largest supplier of concrete, cement and construction aggregate. At this Lafarge plant, it produces precast concrete products including beams, slabs and wall panels. The tour will showcase the entire process in the manufacturing of said products.
PCL Canadian Museum for Human Rights Construction Site – Departs @ 9:30 a.m.
Projected to open in 2012, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights will be Canada’s newest national museum with a mission to enhance the understanding of human rights, to promote respect for others and to encourage reflection and dialogue. This tour will include a presentation of the 3D structural modelling software being used in design and a view of the ongoing construction process.
Winnipeg North End Water Pollution Control Facility – Departs @ 9:30 a.m.
The recently upgraded North End Water Pollution Control Centre treats 160ML/day or upwards of 70% of Winnipeg’s total wastewater. This tour will showcase the entire process of treating raw wastewater.
Manitoba Hydro Office Tower – Departs @ 9:45 a.m.
In Late 2008, Manitoba Hydro opened its new corporate headquarters. The building is 60% more energy efficient than similar sized buildings and has been awarded the Best Tall Building in the America’s Award. Come see what makes this building unique in Winnipeg’s harsh climate!
E.H. Price HVAC Production Facility – Departs @ 9:30 a.m.
EH Price is a world supplier of heating and ventilating equipment. Price industries has three locations, one in Georgia, one in Arizona, and one in Winnipeg. The factory in Winnipeg consists of many automated processes including sheet metal working, machining, and welding. In addition, EH Price has a state of the art test room which is capable of simulating virtually any HVAC scenario and demonstrating the performance of a system to the buyer.
Standard Aero – Jet Engine Maintenance Facility - Departs @ 9:30 a.m.
Standard Aero is a company that performs Aircraft engine maintenance, repair, and overhaul. Some interesting things that can be seen on this tour include methods of non-destructive testing of part for defects, laser-welding stations, large machining centers, and various other high precision processes.
IMRIS – MRI Development and Production Facility – Departs @ 10:0 a.m.
IMRIS is a Winnipeg based company and is a global leader in image guided therapy solutions. At their Winnipeg based facilities they develop and build state of the art MRI machines to help doctors and patients around the world.
Half Pints Brewery - Departs @ 9:30 a.m., 10:15 a.m.
It’s not the size of the brewery that counts, it’s what you brew with it. Manitoba’s own local brewery is a proud sponsor of this year’s Western Engineering Competition. They will be offering a tour of Winnipeg’s plant that will also include a beer tasting.
